About This Site

The purpose of this site is to disseminate and discuss cutting edge Earth science education inquiry activities, such as data rich explorations and simulations. It also features discussions of new pedagogies, ideas for new resources, and issues of interest to students of Earth science, whether enrolled in an educational institution or not. Of particular interest are issues of sustainability, climate, and Earth science education.

The authorI am a retired Earth Science Professor from the University of California, Santa Barbara. During my tenure at UCSB, I taught a large, general education oceanography class to as many as 600 students. Because of the large numbers, it was very difficult to evaluate student work on assignments that required students to think deeply about the subject. I felt that I could do better, so focussed the last decade of my career on developing pedagogy and online tools that could accomplish this goal. This web site contains many of the findings, tools, and strategies that I developed.

Major recent projects are: "The Fishing Game" and "Learning With Data."

Some of the materials are at my older web site.

I have a keen interest in education, technology, bicycle riding, windsurfing, jazz keyboard, and walking my dog, Gaia. Gaia is an avid student of her ancestry.

I am very interested in your feedback and suggestions. Please feel free to contact me at: My Email
